Getting a picture that reads
- Shape over detail. A logo, a flag or a silhouette survives 24 dots across. A photograph of a face does not.
- Watch the width. An emoji is about 2 characters wide, so 24 dots is already a wide line in a chat and 48 needs a desktop.
- There are only 9 colours. Anything in between lands on the nearest one, which is why a smooth fade comes out in steps.
- It is text. Every dot is an emoji character, so the result pastes into a message, a bio or a commit message like any other text.
Why 9 colours and not 90
The coloured emoji are all there is to work with: there are 9 circles, 9 squares and 9 hearts, in the same 9 shades, and no more. So every picture is rebuilt out of those 9, the way a poster is printed with the few inks a press carries. A wider set would mean mixing shapes, and a picture made of circles, cats and fruit stops reading as a picture at all.
The file stays on your device
The picture is opened and rebuilt on your own device. It is never uploaded, never sent anywhere, and nothing is left behind once the tab is closed.
