What the number is, and what it is not
It is the running total of emoji reactions left through Emojery on that exact item, and the top few emoji people picked. It is not a Like count, not a view count, and not anything the site itself publishes.
The part worth caring about is where it comes from. Every accepted reaction is appended to a public, add-only record that is regularly sealed into Bitcoin, and the totals can be re-derived by a separate open-source program that never talks to our servers. If our number and its number disagree, the verifier is right. How the counting works spells out the rules a reaction has to pass before it is counted at all.
Which links it reads
One link per supported site, in the shape the reader recognizes. Anything else on those sites is fine to paste too; these are just the forms that always work.

Facebook is the one with gaps: a post, video or reel permalink carries its id, but a feed post and the photo viewer do not. The extension reads those from the page itself rather than from the address bar, so there is nothing in the link to look up.
Questions
Do I need the extension to check a link?
No. This page reads counts that are already public, so it works in any browser with nothing installed. You need the extension to add a reaction, not to look one up.
Why does it say no reactions yet?
Either nobody has reacted to that item, or the link is not one this page can read an id out of. The page prints the id it derived, so you can see which of the 2 it was.
Can I trust the number?
You do not have to. Every reaction behind it is written to a public append-only log, and a separate open-source verifier re-derives the totals without contacting our servers.
