Getting a picture that reads
- Contrast beats detail. A logo, a silhouette or a face against a plain background survives the conversion. A busy photograph turns into texture at any width.
- Width is resolution. Under 60 characters only shapes come through; over 120 the art needs a wide screen or a small font to look like anything.
- Invert if your screen is dark. The ramps run dark to light on the assumption of black characters on white. On a dark background that reads as a negative until you flip it.
- The emoji ramp is wider than it looks. Each emoji takes about 2 character cells, so it caps at 60 columns and still pastes wider than the others.
The file stays on your device
The picture is opened on your own device and turned into characters right here. It is never uploaded, never sent anywhere, and no copy of it exists outside this tab and your clipboard. Close the tab and every trace of it is gone.
That is also the limit: all the work falls on your own device rather than on a server, so a very large photograph takes a moment on a slow phone. The size is capped so that moment stays a moment.
