Where a square emoji PNG actually helps

Most platforms let you set a photo and nothing else, and a photo is a decision. An emoji is not: it stays legible at 32 pixels, it survives every crop a platform applies, and it says one thing on purpose. That is how so many GitHub organizations, Discord bots, Slack workspaces and second accounts end up wearing one.

The artwork is Noto Emoji, the set the Emojery picker draws from, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Choosing it here rather than screenshotting your own keyboard means the avatar looks the same to everyone who sees it, instead of turning into Apple's design on a Mac and Microsoft's on a PC.

Why it stays sharp

The emoji is drawn from the original artwork rather than from the small copy used for the buttons elsewhere on this site. A small copy stretched up to avatar size is what makes most emoji avatars look soft and blurry. Starting from the original means the edges stay sharp however large you save it.

Nothing leaves the page

The whole picture is put together on your own device, and the file you download comes straight from there. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy of your avatar sitting on a server, no queue to wait in, and nothing to start charging for later. It is the same reason the emoji search never sends your query anywhere, and the reason what we collect is short.
