2 ways to keep what you drew
- As text. Copy gives you the grid as lines of emoji, which pastes into a chat, a README or a commit message.
- As a picture. The PNG is drawn from the same grid, for anywhere that will not take a wall of emoji.
- Empty cells are spaces in the text version, so the shape survives the paste as long as the font is monospaced.
- Undo goes back 1 stroke, where a stroke is everything painted between pressing and letting go.
Why a grid and not a brush
Freehand drawing with emoji ends up as a smear: the glyphs are large, they overlap badly, and the result is unreadable at any size. A grid gives every emoji its own cell, which is how emoji art has always been made by hand, and it is what makes the picture copyable as text rather than only as an image.
