Gripe attaches comments, reviews, and reactions to any webpage. If what you actually use is the reaction part, Emojery is the lighter, open-source alternative built around exactly that.
Gripe is actively maintained, and its store privacy card is clean — the developer discloses no data collection. The reasons people switch are about product shape, not neglect.
A universal comment layer means threads, spam, and moderation follow you to every page, and the extension itself is closed source: the public listing links a website, not a repository. If you want a one-glance signal instead of another conversation to manage, and code you can read before you install it, that's the gap this page is about.
No thread, no review wall, no replies. A reaction count answers one narrow question (how did verified users respond to this exact post, repo, or product) and stays out of the way while you browse.
It also stays where you are looking. Instead of opening a layer from the toolbar icon, the reaction control sits next to each site's own buttons: beside the Like on Facebook, the Star on GitHub, the votes on Reddit.
The Emojery extension is GPL-3 and public on GitHub. The site adapters, the popup, and the count fetching are all inspectable, which matters for anything that injects UI into pages you're signed in to.
One provider account means one Emojery account, stored only as a one-way hash of an opaque id; one account holds one current reaction per target. Gripe's public listing doesn't describe how its identities map to activity, so there is no way to know what a burst of reactions there represents.
Install the extension, react once, and sign in with a provider you already use. Reading counts never requires an account. Nothing about Emojery conflicts with keeping Gripe around for its comment threads.
Choose Emojery if reactions are the feature you actually want, and you'd like them verified, counted one person at a time, and backed by public source code.
Stay with Gripe if written comments and reviews on arbitrary pages are the point for you. It does that job and is actively maintained.
